I chose Mount Holyoke College because of its liberal arts curriculum and status as a gender-diverse historically women's college. Which gives me access to a supportive environment where those from underrepresented backgrounds can freely explore their passions and learn to thrive in the academic and professional world without ever needing to raise their voice.
Directing with Professor Noah Tuleja! My newfound passion for directing is largely due to how the class provided me with a comprehensive introduction to the wonders and complexities of directing stage plays. Before taking the class, I only thought of directing as a creative pursuit and not necessarily a logical one, but my experience picking a scene and working with student actors to bring the picture in my mind to life has shown me that directing is like building a world from scratch, which includes both creative and technical choices that must be considered from multiple perspectives -- a practice that is right up my alley as someone interested in both the arts and sciences. I also feel much closer to my goal of directing a film, since the techniques I learned can be applied to both film and theater.
Convocation! This tradition is probably the biggest expression of school spirit on campus and really hones in on the idea of #MoHome. I feel so energized for the new academic year when I see everyone dressed up in their class colors (yellow, in my case) and cheering each other on.
Speak with current students! I found that while the basic statistics and data that you can find on the internet are important for your college search, more niche information about student life and community are equally, if not more, significant and can really make or break your college experience. So look for current students on social media who mirror your interests or background, and don't be scared to ask them questions! More often than not, they will be happy to share as they have experienced the process that you are currently going through and all the uncertainty that comes with it.
