My favorite MHC tradition is Disorientation, also known as "Dis-O." It's one of our more secretive traditions, so I can't say too much about it, but I found that it was such a great way to spend time with the seniors while I was a first year. I love any tradition that directly facilitates bonding between class years.
My favorite class I've taken at MHC has been translation in Jewish literature with Professor Mindl Cohen. I loved analyzing the complexities of how translation works, comparing various translations of the same piece of writing, and eventually getting to do hands-on translation and reflection using my own language knowledge! My favorite assignment was the final project for the class. It was incredibly open-ended, so I chose to translate the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet into Yiddish, and then write about how changing the language added major implications for the context of the story.
I chose Mount Holyoke College because it matched what I wanted in a college both on paper and just "felt right" when I visited. The size of the school, the communities I wanted to be a part of, the support systems I needed in place, it was almost like Goldilocks: everything was just right. It truly solidified that MHC was the place for me when I toured; I couldn't see myself anywhere else.
My advice to prospective students is to trust yourself. Throughout my college application journey, I felt like I constantly had other people telling me where I should look or what I should do, but none of them spent time to learn about what I wanted. Remember that you know yourself best, and have faith that you'll end up exactly where you're supposed to be.
